This week marked the 30th anniversary of the Star Wars Holiday Special, possibly the single worst moment in the history of the Star Wars franchise (which is saying something). A moment so bad that the special, like the Warner Brothers and their sister Dot, has been locked away in the vaults of Lucasfilm and CBS, never to be aired again.

And yet, it's also part of Star Wars legend, screened on poor quality videotapes at cons, whispered about by those of us who saw it as children, wondered about by those too young to have been there. So, to the credit of Lucasfilm, this week the Star Wars website will be paying homage to the special. Say what you will about George Lucas, but his organization really seems to have a sense of humor and seems to appreciate the devotion the fans have for the franchise.

The special, however, is still buried in the vaults. Which, given what I remember of it, is probably for the best. (For the record, as a 10 year old, I liked it, but mainly because of the cartoon that introduced Boba Fett.)

Besides, if you want to see the stars of Star Wars on a variety, there's always their visit to The Muppet Show!
