If you haven't already read it, I highly recommend "Asimov's Guide to Shakespeare" as both a reference and a fun read. Asimov took the position that there was nothing he could say from a literary point of view that hadn't been said better already, so he used the book to fill in modern audiences on the history that Shakespeare's audience would have already known and taken for granted. The section on the various history plays is especially fun.
