I wish I could say something to change your mind, but... the whole thing has me rather reminded of the story of King David and the census. We're looking at a government that believes outlawing a single revolting medical procedure constitutes protecting life, but that electrocuting criminals of debatable guilt is okay; that we're strong enough to fight a war on two fronts when the fighting men in the lowest ranks have to put family members on food stamps because pay and shelter aren't enough to support their families. We've got a government that believes it's powerful enough not to need any help. If that's not the equivalent of saying 'yeah, yeah, divine protection, great, but tell me how much of an army I can summon up to centralize power in my person anyway', I'm not sure what is.
