So not long ago, if you wanted live action superheroes on TV, and were a DC fan, you had to settle for Smallville. Which was good sometimes and dopey other times. It went away, and we had nothing. And then came Arrow. And in short order it went from "dumb but fun" to "hey, this is pretty good" to "wow, did you see that!" It was riffing off the DCU but it was all alone.
Then came word of a possible spinoff with the Flash. Which became a two parter that introduced Barry Allen and set up the series. It wasn't a sure thing that the CW would bite.
And elsewhere, there was talk of a show set in Gotham when Bruce Wayne was 11 and Jim Gordon was young. And of a TV show with John Constantine, this time actually played by a Brit with blonde hair. And even a pilot for a show based on the Vertigo comic iZombie, with Rob Thomas of Veronica Mars fame as showrunner. It was all too much at once. Surely, we wouldn't get all of this.
Well, last week Fox announced 13 episodes of Gotham. Today, the CW announced The Flash and iZombie, and NBC gave the green light for Constantine.
Suddenly, TV is full of DC characters. No, I guess it's not the movies we want instead of the movies Zack is likely to foist upon us. But Arrow has been just as good in its own way. And while it's likely some of these will stink, or be cancelled, it's a good day to be a fan of DC.
I suppose there are some who don't like this trend. Who are wary of the Marvel Cinematic Universe taking over Netflix and ABC, of a DCTVU taking over the CW, of more costumes and aliens and things that go bump in the night coming from every corner of a lively comic book industry. Well, I say, it's our turn. Bring it on! Bring it all on!
Just don't expect me to have a social life once it all gets going.
