We just watched Veronica Mars. At home, since it's not in wide release and since it was clear that we didn't need a big screen for it. And it was good. Not great. But good in a generally satisfying if somewhat bittersweet way. This was essentially one last long episode of a beloved TV series. The pieces worked for the most part. I can't say this was essential viewing, or a film that had to be made. And I think once is enough.

But it was good to have the old gang back once more, to see everyone slip on their old characters and do well by them. I have some qualms with the decisions Veronica makes, but I think we're supposed to. At its heart, Veronica Mars remains California noir, where sometimes the heroes aren't entirely heroic, or smart, but are still heroes. I think seeing Rob Thomas remain true to the series and his vision from all those years back is a good thing.

If you haven't seen it, though, it has the look of a TV show, as I expected, so you might do just as well seeing it at home and saving your movie money for Winter Soldier. This is not a bad thing. Or a good thing. It's merely what it is, the result of a remarkable Kickstarter campaign that let us return to Neptune when no one thought it was possible. And for that, I am glad, albeit with a small screen.
