RIP Maurice Sendak
May. 8th, 2012 08:52 amThe great Maurice Sendak has passed away.
We did a show of his art at the JM some years ago. I didn't get to really meet him, but I did get to see him draw Max's face on a blank-faced mannequin in our galleries, and to hear him in conversation with Tony Kushner. And I got to shake his hand and say "thank you."
He told a charming story at the opening. The cane he was using belonged before him to Beatrix Potter. So he had to use it that night and bring her along to the museum in spirit.
That exhibition was, of the hundred or so I've worked on, my favorite. Achingly beautiful and heartfelt, sad and funny, and so full of life. Not unlike his books. Not unlike him.
Rest well, Mr. Sendak. And thank you.
