The New 52 - Week Four
Sep. 28th, 2011 02:30 pmOnly three new titles for me today. I have to wonder if the friend who thinks DC front-loaded the better comics in the first two weeks was right.
Superman - A mixed bag by Perez and Merino. It feels at turns very old school and overly modern, and there is a tension in storytelling that is not that inviting. Also, Superman is barely established as a character in his own book. But we do get a lot of action (if spotty art), some really good character moments with Lois, and some intriguing set-up. Not sure, however, that I wouldn't rather wait for the TPB on this one and get my Superman dosage from Morrison's Action Comics.
The Fury of Firestorm the Nuclear Man - Yes, that's the full title, like the classic comic of my youth. Which this bears no resemblance to. I'm not sure what it resembles. It's kind of a mess, and not really all that interesting. Neither of the main characters is interesting, and stuff just seems to happen. Maybe Simone and Van Sciver are going somewhere with it. But i don't feel much of a reason to come back right now.
The Flash - The general concern was that artists Manapul and Buccalleto wouldn't be good writers, even though their art is amazing. Good news: they can write a good, fun, exciting story to go with the art. I'm reminded of the kind of stories that Mark Waid told when the speedster in red was Wally West, and that's good. And the angst that Johns lays on Barry Allen is gone. if you want something out there and different, this isn't for you. But if you want the fastest man alive doing what only he can do, and with a light touch, you should try this.
