Tonight marks the beginning of the year 5770 on the Jewish calendar, and with it comes the somber if still somewhat festive two-day event called Rosh Hashanah, followed eight days later by Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. It's a rather intense time of year, marked by prayer and self-examination, by looking back with a bit of trepidation and looking ahead with both trepidation and a bit of hope. There is a lot on my mind this time around, with myriad concerns for the world, for the Jewish people and Israel, for the US and for NYC, for family and friends, and for myself and Batya. In that it's really not any different than most years.
What I hope will be different is that maybe this time I can look inward a little better than I did last year and fix better what I can fix. I cannot change the world by myself. But I can change myself and perhaps that can help change the world.
In any case, I want to wish all of you a Shanah Tovah, a good year. May this year be the one we hope for.
(Also, Please note that I will be offline most of the weekend, and might not try to catch up on my F-list. Also, happy Talk Like a Pirate Day to those who will be talking like a pirate tomorrow.)
