The Comic Book Show - Opening Night
Sep. 13th, 2006 12:29 pmLast night, the Museum had its donor opening event for the Masters of American Comics and Superheroes: Good and Evil in American Comics. As befits such a night, we had some interesting guests.
- Jerry Robinson, guest curator of the Superheroes show, and one of the men who created the Joker and Robin
- Irwin Hasen, who was one of DC's stalwart cover artists in the 1940s, and also author of the comic strip Dondi
- Jerry Simon, co-creator of Captain America
- Mort Walker, creator of Beetle Bailey
and...
- Paul Levitz, head honcho of DC Comics
As I needed to make sure all of these men were photographed, I got to introduce myself to all, to tell Hasen that I used to read Dondi, and to tell Levitz how much I'm enjoying 52. (Levitz was the man who suggested that DC fill in themissing year with a weekly comic.)
Levitz, after seeing the shows, came back to me to compliment the place and to say how much he was thinking of his friend Will Eisner, one of the artists in the Masters exhibition. I cannot tell you how good it felt that Paul Levitz decided I was the face of the museum. My inner fanboy was having a ball.
Oh, and Levitz was one of many men wearing superhero neckties.
I was here till 8:30, but it was a good night.
