Wee Free Movie?
Jan. 11th, 2006 11:44 amScifi.com is reporting that Sam Raimi (of Evil Dead and Spider-Man fame) will be directing an adaptation of PTerry's Wee Free Men, after doing the next Spidey film '07.
This is surprising for many reasons. First off, PTerry is on record as not wanting films made of his books, mainly because he fears the excessive merchandising such films generate. There has ben somewhat less in the way of insane merchandising of late, so perhaps he got a deal that suits his desires in this regard.
Secondly, I don't quite see Raimi being the right person to do this. He's never done a kids film before - and this will surely be aimed at that crowd - and he's not my choice for a British fantasy novel. I hope that no one gets the bright idea to de-Brtish-ize this book. That would ruin it.
Thirdly, I never expected to see any Pratchett adapted simply because he remains just below the popular radar here. Never mind that I have trouble seeing even the milder wordplay of the young adult PTerry books working in a film. Fact is, I don't think I want to see his stuff adapted (and yes, I know there are animated adapations of some books).
All that said, I do wonder just how this will be made, and what will stay the same and what won't. And whether a certain major PTerry character with a cameo in the book will be in the film. And if so, who plays her.
