Item: Veronica Mars and Lost are both new this week. At this point, we're likely to have few reruns between now and the season finales. Lost fan, take note that the show will have 24 episodes rather than 22, and that the finale will be 90 minutes, so check the listings and reset your VCR.

Item: Tru Calling returns! The Fox show, once renewed for a second season but consigned to cancellation with six episodes filmed, will be shown over the next five Thursdays. Tomorrow two episodes will air from 8 to 10, and then the remaining episodes will run at 9 pm. Ironically, it replaces Point Pleasant, which was the show Fox bought instead of Tru Calling as a better compliment to The OC. Ther is, I think, no chance that Tru will get renewed but it would be nice if she got better ratings than Point Pleasant anyway.

Item: Looking for a good mystery? Then read Martin Cruz Smith's Wolves Eat Dogs. This is the fifth in his series featuring the embittered, embattled and dedicated Moscow police detective Arkady Renko, and it's the best of the set. Renko, older but no wiser or less committed to doing his job in a city gone from Communist decay to capitalist corruption, must solve a mystery with a connection to the nightmare of Chernobyl. Smith sends Renko and the reader to the evacuated radioactive land around the ruins of the plant, and creates a world both chilling and exciting. I highly recommend reading the others books in the series, but this one stands alone nicely. Smith is one of today's best American mystery novelists, and Renko is one of my favorite detectives.

Item: Maurice Sendak fans, awaken. The Jewish Museum will be opening a retrospective of his artwork two weeks from Friday. While not a family-oriented show per se, I think there will be things about the show that the young fan of his books can enjoy. The show will also look at his work as a designer of costumes and sets for oepras and ballet.

I don't know if I'll get to meet Mr. Sendak - he lives in Conencticut and is not so young as to travel with great ease - but I hope to. I think we all grew up with his work and all have a favorite. it would be nice to thank him in person for all he's done.
