Will Eisner, the creator of The Spirit and one of the truly great creative talents in the history of comic books, has passed on at the age of the 87.

I have read little by him, but even from a distance know the power of his art, the command of his words, and the influence he had. He was one of the inventors of the graphic novel. He was a New York Jew whose work often captured the experience of growing up in the tenements and whose next work to be released will be a graphic novel debunking the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. He influenced generations of artists and writers, served as a partial inspiration for the characters in Chabon's "Kavalier and Clay," and was honored as the namesake for the Eisner Awards.

Visit www.newsarama.com for a complete bio and what are likely to be tributes by people of far more note and knowledge than myself.

May his family, friends and fans be comforted among the mourners of Zion and the world.
