How I Spent My 4th
Jul. 5th, 2004 06:11 am- The main event of the day was a barbecue hosted by the new husband of a member of the Clan. Still really don't know him too well, but anyone whose choice of beer is Sam Adams is OK in my book. Oddly, until I met my current group of friends, I never did a 4th of July BBQ aside from at really forgettable singles weekends. Guess when you live in a apartment all your life, BBQs are rare.
Spent a good chunk of the afternoon schmoozing with the Clan members present and other friends, pondering why Marvel gets Spider-Man 2 and DC gets Halle Bery as Catwoman, and imagining a meeting in a tavern between Jack O'Neiil and John Crichton. Have I mentioned how cool the Clan is?
- Got to see a bit of the fireworks over Manhattan from our bedroom window. There are advantages to living on the fifth floor sometimes. A clear night and a record number of fireworks helps, too. Quite a show, even from this distance.
- Mixed in with the BBQ was the ballgame. As many of you may know, the Mets and Yankees palyed again over the weekend, with the starling result of the Mets sweeping the Yanks for the first time and winning the season series.
And with this game on the tube, many of the people at the BBQ took turns going inside to see how it was going. it was nice to be able to watch the game with other baseball people, evne if I didn't know any of them - they were all friends of the husband, I'd venture. But we have that common interest of the game. Not that everyone was on the same side, of course. Half Met fans, half Yankee fans. Not much bad blood, but certainly it was intense.
That said, I fin myself quite happy about the Mets' good fortune. I didn't conmtribute a thing to the Mets' wins. Their wins don't mean that they are a great team. And it's jsut a game. But we watch sports in hopes of seeing our team exceed expectations, and I would say that this time they did just that. So, Let's Go Mets!
