Firstly, a reprint from last Thanksgiving wherein thank the important and not-so-important people in my life. The only thing I would change is that I might list different comic book writers.

Been an odd week so far. Yesterday, I was at work from 6:20 am till 10 pm because a crew from Martha Stewart Living TV was here to do a segment on the Museum's Hanukkah lamps. This was the single largest TV crew we've ever had, with two sets of camera equipment, a vast amount of meticulous filming of lots of Hanukkah lamps, and Martha herself. When she came in at about 8 am to prepare for the segment, she saw the tired look on my face, took it for concern about the shoot, smiled, and said "don't worry. It will be fine." Guess what, folks? She's a real person, just like the rest of us.

Still, having to be here both before and after hours was exhausting. (We have to work this way as we cannot do this kind of filming or taping when we are open to the public.) The exposure for the Museum will be good, but I hope the next crew is a more basic one camera, two lights deal.

So, that's one odd thing. Here's one that's less happy - two friends lost parents yesterday, both to cancer. One friend is someone I'm not that close with but who is local and who is close with many in the neighborhood. The other is someone I was very close to for years, though since I got married we've grown apart. In the former case, I knew her father was dying. In the latter, I had no idea that her mother - essentially her only parent as her father vanished from the picture ages ago - was ill. I kind of regret not being there for this friend, but I also know that her husband and family were there for her.

Thus tomorrow promises to be an odd day. The only day I can make a shiva call to either mourner is tomorrow. Thanksgiving now becomes a bit bittersweet as we first schlep to Flatbush for my old friend, and then probably make the local shiva call after dinner. I suppose it's a lucky thing that we had no plans for the day. But I think tomorrow is a good day to make a shiva call as those with plans will be busy.

I wasn't entirely sure that I would be ready to take a two-hour train ride both ways to Flatbush, but late last night, my friend's husband called to make sure I got his e-mail. (He thought it had bounced.) He made to effort to make sure I knew. I will make the effort to see an old friend and offer her and her family comfort.

Lastly, and not related to anything above, I read Stephen King's "It." I feel like it deserves a long post of its own but lack the time or energy to get to it. Short version then...

Did I like it? More or less, though it is a bit long (even for King) and took a while to get me totally involved. As am as enamored of it as many King fans? Nope. It's very good in spots but the characters don't entirely engage me and one of the two interlocking stories is not as interesting as the other. Would I recommend this to King fans. Of course.

Two things about the book: 1) I wonder if the "real name" of the clown and the assumed name of the villain in "Dreamcatcher" are meant to be related. (If you've read both, you'll know what I refer to.) 2) I see a lot in this book that reminds me of stuff Joss Whedon did on Buffy, in terms of both characters and the locale. Joss has referes to many influences on his work. But has anyone ever heard him refer to Stephen King? And for that matter, does anyone know if King has ever said what he thinks of Buffy?

To all out there, a happy, safe, calm and fun Thanksgiving.
