"Not Much":
Sep. 4th, 2003 12:38 pmBatya and I recently came to an interesting conclusion. When someone asks us "what's new?", even someone we've been out of touch with for months or years, we tend to find little that is new. I tend to answer "not much."
I thought about this, and decided that this is a good thing. Stability, a lack of unwanted change, calm are all things I strive for. This doesn't make for interesting conversation sometimes. I would love to be albe to tell old friends that I've just been published or won the lottery. But I'm just as happy that I can't tell them about anything negative that is "new."
At this point, I would say, there are three things I hope to have as answers to "what's new?" The first - a new job. I'm here 13 years this week - must be some kind of record for our generation to stay put so long - but soner or later, I should move on. And Batya will hopefully find a good full-time job. The second - purchase of an apartment or house. We've been looking without much intent, but clearly renting is not the way to go, and I do plan to get serious at some point. The third - offspring, at the time of God's choosing but hopefully while I am still young enough to let such offsrping run me ragged.
I would also hope that "published now" will be an answer that either or both of us can give. But that requires a lot more outside help than the other three.
But in general, I am happy to report that our lives have little that is "new." New books to read, new films to see, new songs to write and sing, new friends to make, yes. Otherwise, "not much" is a fine answer, I would say.
