Back from Ohio
Nov. 5th, 2002 01:05 pmWell, here I am, back at the office, with a lot of work to do, and a lot of blogs and so forth to catch up on. So I will not have the chance at this time to do a full OVFF report. Not sure I need to, given how many filkers keep blogs. And certainly
cadhla captured the emotional value of the con in her entry.
But I do want to note that Batya and I had a great time, and that this was the best con I've been to in ages. Last year, OVFF was a refuge after the events of 9/11. This year, it was still a refuge from the big bad world - no one talks about the news at cons if we can help it - but it was much more. It was a homecoming. Seeing old friends, making new ones that you realize were your friends long before you met them, sharing the music and the fun and the tears and the thoughts. Kind of like family.
It's always great seeing Seanan, and Jordan and Amanda, and Eloise, and Elissa (is that how she spells her name). It's great to hear Steve Mac do "Grabthar's Silver Hammer," and to hear Gwen's harp and Debbie's flute and Dan Glasser's 12-string. It's great to talk rock and cartoons with members of Ookla, to talk about things that concern the Orthodox Jew in filk with Harold the Ose-Walrus, to talk books with just about anyone in the dealers room. It's great to hang out in the lobby with the guitarists, to see the neo-filker teens in the con suite, to listen to Batya and Seanan and Merav practice.
And it's spectacular to see Lady Mondegreen make their official debut and bring the place to life, and to see everyone go crazy when Jordan Mann offers a free CD and suddenly finds himself swamped like he's Elvis (not that Elvis has anything on Jordan).
We were home. As much as we are at home with the Dreamer Clan, or with our birth families. And it was wonderful.
FIAWOL - Filk is a Way of Life. Yeah!
