Two Random Mondayisms
Oct. 21st, 2002 11:25 am1. Watched the fourth episode aired of Firefly (which IIRC is actually the third but was held back). Really, really liked it. It was funny, well-acted, and made the point with only a mild loss of subtlety. Plus someone finally stopped treating Shephard like he was a sacred object, and Mal didn't do his "I'm not a good guy, really" routine. The script was by Ben Edlund, creator of The Tick, but it felt like Joss wrote it. Why was this ep good? Maybe because Edlund is not under any pressure to write something un-Buffy-like or wholly new. The expectation level for someone who created The Tick is probably quite different. Anyway, maybe this show will be as good as we want to hope.
And I am now wondering if Mr. Edlund might try his hand at writing a Buffy episode. Could be fun.
2. I need bifocals. I've suspected this for a while, as I joined the reading-small-print-without-glasses club some months ago, but now it's confirmed. Happily, this doesn't make me feel old. I know plenty of people with bifocals younger than me. But it does make me feel older, feel as if my body has begun its slow decay. This year I needed dental surgery twice, and may need it a third. What's more, getting older is expensive. Even with health coverage, the bifocals will cost more than my standard glasses have.
This, one would suspect, is truly where all thta anxienty about health care costs begins. When you're young and healthy, you think that you need the coverage for emergencies only, and while you won't live without it, you don't think much about it either. Now, it becomes clear that getting older means the everyday things cost more, too. And that's where issues and concerns are born.
