News from the Disc
Oct. 15th, 2002 01:52 pmSo, it's getting close to holiday season and you don't know what to buy your book-reading friends. No new Harry Potter book in sight. No sequel just yet to John Adams. Yet another Robert Jordan book, but you fear that your friends' bookshelves will collapse or form black holes if they have just one more of those monsters. And you certainly aren't buying the next William Shatner Trek novel.
Well, fear not. Terry Pratchett is back. And so is Sam Vimes. "Night Watch" is due out at the beginning of November, and from the description/review below, it looks to be a hoot and a holler. I won't give anything away in case you want to be really surprised, but I will say it seems like Pratchett has gotten around the problem of things in Ankh-Morpork being pretty under control with Vetenari and Vimes on hand.

If you haven't tried the Pratchett series yet, odds are that you would be better off with one of the earlier novels, almost all of which are available again in paperback. Odds are also that you will be captivated, especially by the previous Sam Vines/Guards novels, which have slowly turned from light-hearted cop adventure into the most serious, philosophical and accomplished of the Discworld books.
But I suspect that I am far from alone in salivating over the prospect of a new Vimes novel. So start making those holiday shopping plans!
Note: the above is not a shameless effort to get you to actually buy this book for us, although I won't stop you if you do. Nor is it a commercial from HarperCollins, although if they wish to pay me for this post, I will happily accept money or Discworld merchandise. It is simply me being happy about this book.
It is also me trying to get Americans to pay as much attention to Pratchett as do the English. Apparently, Pratchett sold more books a year in the UK than anyone for years, until Ms. Rowling's wizard came along. Indeed, while the pre-order sales of this book rank an impressive 1,598 at the American Amazon site, it's number 7 on the UK site! Thus, my crusade to get America to think Discworld.
