Some bits of casting talk are too odd not to note. Several British newspapers are claiming that David Boreanaz - yes, that David Boreanaz - has signed to play Superman.

Now I don't buy this for a second. This rumor sprang from nowhere, and it would imply that Boreanaz has already written off the next season of Angel. Beyond that, though, the idea is rather odd. I suppose that trading in his fangs and pale skin for a red S and solar-powered powers might be a way to avoid being typecast as a creature of the night. But can anyone see him as Supes? He's at his best when he is in the darkness of Angel/Angelus. We'd either get him terribly miscast, or get a darker Superman than I'd care to see.

Of course, I long ago decided he would be an ideal Batman, but that would be typecasting.

Why should I care? Only because Warner Bros., embarrassed by how well Marvel is doing with its adpatations while the studio cannot figure out what to do with Supes or Batman, is rushing to get something made. As a longtime Superman fan, I watch this project with great interest, knowing that how Supes is depicted in this film will leave a mark on how the character is portrayed and perceived for years. A bad film will overshadow the good work of Smallville and the late 90s cartoon, and leave a black mark on the Man of Steel. A good film, and he could have as much of a renaissance as the first two Batman films gave Bats.

So I read each casting note with interest and with dread, knowing that the studio wants a big-name actor, preferably one with hunk appeal, and that this time there is no unknown waiting to surprise us. If Boreanaz really is doing the role, at least we get rid of all the young heartthrobs of limited talent. But would it be a sign that maybe there will be risks taken along the way?

Who knows? I myself would rather wait five years and do a superman film after Smallville is over, with Welling and Rosenbaum resuming the parts. That ain't gonna happen, though, so the Superman fans of America and the world wait, and wonder if anyone really has a clue.
