Let’s talk turkey. Or rather, comics to have with your turkey…

52, Week Twenty-Nine – It’s Thanksgiving, but the JSA has little to be thankful for, as its membership is down to Alan Scott, Jay Garrick and Wildcat. What’s more, they find themselves watching the parade march right by their HQ, a parade that includes Infinity Inc. Whose newest member calls herself Jade (as in Alan’s late daughter). Before the old heroes can react, Alan’s son Obsidian shows up and goes after Inf-Inc. There’s a scene, and Alan has to restrain his son, and then get a dressing down from Luthor’s made-for TV heroes. Is this the end for the JSA? (Of course not. The new JSA comic is coming in December.)

Meanwhile, on Oolong Island, a typically weird Thanksgiving doesn’t go too well at all for Will Magnus. And in Metropolis, Steel wakes the next morning to find that Luthor’s meta-treatment wears off.

This still feels padded, and is likely to for a while. But the individual scenes works well. We see just how far Luthor will go in appropriating the past to serve his plans. We see that the mad scientists, as wacky as they seem, are very, very dangerous, and that Will is in deep trouble. And we see that Luthor’s scheme is still unfolding. Oh, and it looks like we are getting the real John Henry Irons back.

Next week: Batman!

Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes 24 – On Rokyn Supergirl saves the day in the fight against the Legion of Super-Villains, without any powers, and is invited back with open to the team. The team takes the Phantom Zone projector back to Earth, to figure out who Imra is sensing, but before they can free Mon-El, the LSV gears up to attack HQ. Like most issues of late, not much happens other than set-up, but what we see is really well done. Supergirl continues to be likeable, Brainy continues to be arrogant but intriguing, and Kitson’s art is great. The high point, however, is a one page explanation of what it means to be Kandor. Waid reinvents everything about being a bottle city and makes us want to see more. But first, I want to see all the threads become a story again.

Connor Hawke: Dragon’s Blood 1 (of 6) – Connor Hawke, once again seeking his center at the monastery, is invited to compete in an archery contest in Shanghai. His buddy and bodyguard, Eddie Fyers, thinks something isn’t right about this, and goes along. And given that the guest list includes the Bamboo Monkey and Lady Shado, Eddie might be right. Oh, and there is something about legend of a dragon connected to this. If you read the old Green Arrow comic starring Connor and written by Chuck Dixon, you know what to expect. Lots of action, Eddie being snarky, Connor being likeable and a bit otherworldly and clueless. This is a fairly basic action comic, the kind DC barely has anymore, and it stars a great character under the pen of his best writer. Which is to say, you already know if you care, and if you don’t already, don’t bother. Good thing I care, even if this issue is mainly set-up.
