Yes, really.

Well, sort of.

Ysterday it was announced that sportscaster Al Michaels - best known among non-fans for his "Do You Believe in Miracles? Yes!" call at the 1980 US-USSR Olympic hockey game - is leaving ABC for NBC. Today it was announced that NBC Universal had agreed with Disney (parent company of ABC as well as ESPN) to give partial rights or highlights of several sports events to ESPN. And that the rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit would be transferred to Disney.

Oswald was Walt Disney's first commercially successful creation, but he didn't own the right to the rabbit, and was forced to create a similar, far more well-known character with mouse ears. I think that Disney the company felt that it was only right to unite Oswald with the financial heirs to his creator. Not that I expect to see any Oswald comeback anytime soon.

Still, I love the idea that you can trade a sportscaster for a Toon. How much would Bob Costas or Marv Albert be worth? And what about someone like John Madden or Dick Vitale, who are so animated as to be part-Toon? Is Disney possibly considering trading some of its biggest names to CNN, in exchange for Bugs Bunny?

And is this how we can finally liberate Mickey? All we need is a big enough name willing to let himself or herself be traded to Disney. It might be worth looking into.
