Why We Aren't Going to Worldcon
We really wanted to go to Worldcon. It's fairly close, a lot of our friends will be there, and we figured that such an opportunity wouldn't be likely for some time. (We are not going to Scotland, I can almost guarantee.)
But life has a way of shifting your priorities. Last Tuesday, we looked at an apartment. To buy. We liked it. And all of the sudden, our bank account looked different.
We knew, of course, that someday we would stop putting off the step from being renters to owners. We just didn't think much about it. And had this apartment come in our sights a month later, we would have most likely headed to the con anyway.
Instead, we are now looking into a mortgage, a real estate lawyer, plans for moving, plans for packing, and so on. I think that we really need a con to unwind at, but there's a down payment to think about first.
This is all rather big. I know millions of people do this every year, but I sometimes thought we could just keep renting. This is a good thing, buying our own place. But man is it daunting.
So them's of you out there going to the con, have fun and say hi to each other. And hopefully, in a few months, we can invite at least the locals to our place for a housefilk or for tea.

I am very happy for the both of you, and can't wait for the chance to come over and sleep in your new living room!
Owning is daunting, yes, in ways that rental can never be. But it's rewarding, too; there's something wonderful about knowing that you can so paint your kitchen canary yellow, if you really want to...

We will let everyone know about getting help once we are ready to start the moving process.

Next up: getting the sellers to make a few repairs (or to lower the price a bit) and getting the mortgage in place.

Will we be seeing you and Batya at OVFF? I hope to be there and this time not to be too sick to sing!

BTW, I cannot figure out who you are from your LJ profile, and for reasons known only to the computer gods I cannot read your LJ posts. So may I ask who you are?

I wrote "The Secret Rose" but everyone thinks Mark Osier did (I think he did help me with the tune, but the poem was written by me in 1988 before I ever met him) because he was able to travel a lot more than me the couple of years after we first sang it at OVFF in 92. I also wrote "Tisselen's Dance", the Good Die Young parody with Tom and Ginny, and the really ose one that has Snape bemoaning the fact that his lost love is in Azkaban.
Only "The Secret Rose" is well-known. I think.

(will miss you both this weekend though)

We haven't made the move to houseowning yet, and are sorta torn between that and child-related investments. Either way, a lot of money can suddenly look like very little!
