Dwayne McDuffie RIP

As you might recall, just eight days ago I saw a preview of All-Star Superman. Screenwriter Dwayne McDuffie was in attendance. He was proud of his script, thrilled to be adapting a favorite comic, and looking forward to meeting Grant Morrison at SDCC. Alas, this was not meant to be. Mr. McDuffie passed away suddenly today.

Dwayne was a successful screenwriter for WB Animation, a major part of the Justice League cartoon's creative team. He worked on a number of shows, including the adaptation of his Static Shock comic. He was also a comic book writer with runs on JLA and Fantastic Four to his credit. But his most enduring legacy was as one of the founders of Milestone Media, a comic book company that made diversity (in every sense of the word) and quality its watchwords. While Milestone didn't last long, its characters (like Static Shock, Icon and Xombi) are now part of the DC Universe, and many of the writers and artists who worked on those books are still part of the industry.

An industry that is a good deal sadder today. My condolences to his wife, family, friends and fans.

Hopefully, one of those closing quotes from Milestone Forever will be proven true in a good way:

Never assume you've seen the last of anything.

Of Dwayne himself among the living, we have to make that assumption. But in the Milestone characters, whether he had a direct hand or merely an editorial one in their various creations...?
