Here Comes Lunacon
Yup. Two days till our local con arrives. I am looking forward to the event itself, though not too happy about the Rye Town Hilton. They still charge for Internet in the rooms - I would pay more for two nights than for a month at home - and have WiFi only in the lobby despite a major overhaul. And they officially ended shuttle service to the train station. Not that I have used it in a while.
But a good con overcomes its hotel. And it does that through great programs. So without further ado, here is my panel schedule for 2010.
Comics as Ethical Literature
Friday 9:00 PM - 10:00 PM
When people think of comics, they generally think of violence, superpowers, and big-busted women. However, is there is room in the genre for moral quandaries and ethical questions, wedged somewhere between the leather catsuits and the spandex uniforms? Is so, are they the domain of independent comics, or can major titles like X-Men and Superman address those issues, too? Which is more important--spreading a message or staying in business?
Alexandra Elizabeth Honigsberg, Hal Johnson [M], Andrew Wheeler, Alex Wittenberg
I plan to argue that super-hero comics are VERY MUCH about ethics and morals, Marvel's more than DC's. I've done panels with Johnson and Wheeler but not Mrs. Honigsberg.
Lost and Adrift
Saturday 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM
The final season of Lost. Who will live? Who will die? Who will go home? Who will be stuck forever? Open speculation and spoilers about as our panelists discuss their pet theories and personal beliefs about what's really going on. Listen close as they debate the most important question of all: will we ever know the truth?
Kathleen O'Shea David [M], Ty Drago, Stella Price, Hildy Silverman, Alex Wittenberg
This one is gonna be fun. I have no idea who anyone but Kathleen David is, but any excuse to discuss LOST is welcome.
Guilty Pleasures
Saturday 9:00 PM - 10:00 PM
You know it's bad, but you love it anyway. Cheesy soap operas, bad 80's hair bands, other things you can't quit, but can't quite explain.
Kathryn Baker [M], John Douglas, Neal Levin, Theresa Mather, Alex Wittenberg
Too bad I can't think of any truly guilty pleasures. Star Trek novels? Old comics? Nah, I never feel guilty. Again, this is a panel of new faces for me. And will be opposite Masquerade. It's like being on against American Idol, I suppose.
Joss Whedon: Who's To Blame?
Sunday 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Buffy. Firefly. Dollhouse. Fox and Joss Whedon have had a long and bumpy history together. So when Fox canceled Dollhouse during its second season, fans said it was simply more of the same. Yet, the question must be asked: was this all (or even mostly) Fox's fault? Or did Joss himself fumble the ball with this one? Was America really that unready for the show Joss envisioned, or was the show just not ready for TV?
Ariel Cinii, Misty Pendragon [M], Alex Wittenberg, Batya Wittenberg
Another fun panel, especially since I know everyone else with me, and have done Joss panels with Misty in the past.
LJ-Based RPGs
Sunday 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM
No dice. No foam weapons. No rule books. Hardly sounds like gaming, right? However, role-playing in livejournal-based RPGs is both a fun way to play and an improve your writing at the same time. LJ roleplaying--where drama is encouraged!
Nuance Bryant, Alex Wittenberg
Yup, it's another panel where I get to talk about Milliways. Again, I expect a small crowd, but that can be fun, too.
In addition, I asked to be on the Year in Comics panel again, but won't know if I can join up till I get there.
So that is what I will be doing. If you're there, that's where to find me when I am not in the filkroom. Where you can find me for some of the concerts and the open filk, at least for a little while at night.
