Goodbye, Veronica Mars

So we watched the last episode of Veronica Mars. And sadly, there was little there to make me wish the show had not been cancelled. Most of what we saw was far too familiar. Some of it was silly, or made little sense. (Jake Kane is back? There's secret society of the rich and powerful built on blackmail and so secret that no one knows its members? Keith did WHAT?) We see Veronica and Logan both showing that when obsessed, they have not learned a thing from what happened in their lives in the past three years. We have Veronica as Victim again, for no apparent reason. We see Keith act (IMO) totally out of character and ruin his career. And then we don't really get an ending.

Not everything in this episode failed. The acting was great. Some of the script was very strong. But in the end, we leave Neptune on a low note, with Veronica's life in total turmoil again, with her father facing charges and a secret society looking for revenge on Logan and maybe her. And yet, I can't say I care that much. The show's last several episodes were heavy on character play that doesn't play out too well in the end, and light on plots that made any impact on me. The thrill was gone before this, and the failure of Rob Thomas to wrap anything up, knowing that this show was likely to be cancelled, is puzzling.

I'll miss Kristen Bell and Jason Dohring and Enrico Colantoni's talents, though I think all three will do well. But I won't really miss the show as it was at the end. Sorry, Rob.

Apropos of nothing...

The title of your post can be made to scan to "Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road" with just a tiny bit of elision.

I'll leave chasing that bunny down to someone who's actually seen the show. :)
