This Week's Comics - 52, Flash, Runaways

Let's get down to business...

52, Week Twenty-Four: It's the all-exposition issue! Or at least, there's exposition and there's fighting and not much else. In Metropolis, the new Firestorm, the old Firehawk, the new Super-Chief, the new Bulleeteer and Ambush Bug (yes, really) form a new JLA. Which is met with derision by Ollie Queen when he's invited to join, and which doesn't go well at all. How not-well? Super Chief, introduced two weeks ago, dies. So much for him. Granted, it doesn't help that every dolt in Metropolis who got super-powers from Luthor is trying to help, or that Skeets resurfaces and attacks Firestorm.

Meanwhile, Martian Manhunter vows to eliminate the threat of Checkmate (through exposition, it seems) to balance the scales for Ted Kord, and Black Adam abrogates the treaty he negotiated with China. And there's also exposition with Amanda Waller.

We see lots of faces we haven't seen much of, we see the Black Adam Family, we keep moving. But it's a muddle. The best moment? Probably when Ollie, running for mayor, leaves his campaign manager to cover for him while he takes a pseudo-JLA ohone call. His manager's name? Elliot Maggin (the writer who first suggsted Ollie should runs for mayor over thirty eyars ago.) Otherwise, a very weak issue that serves in no way to further most of the major plots.

Flash: The Fastest Man Alive 5 - Bart talks with Cyborg and with Jay, reconsiders his decision to stay retired, and deals with the separate threats of the Griffin and Mota. As usual, there is some good stuff here and and some Eh stuff here. In a way, this is like Heroes. The potential is there, but there's not guarantee of payoff. Beyond which, Heroes doesn't cost $3 an episode. Odds are that after the first story arc ends, I'm outta here.

Runaways 21 - The gang confronts and stops the big monster, and works together as a team. Meanwhile, Chase confronts the Gibborim. A very simple issue, told in a simple and effective manner. Which for BKV is almost a letdown. Oh, this is well written with the usua; strong character play. But after Dr. Strange and Escapists, this seems minor. I think I get why BKV is moving on. He really hasn't got much left to say.

Skeets! Skeets!

But I take it there's no explanation yet for Skeets's behavior.
