The New James Kirk
Oct. 16th, 2007 03:21 pmIt's all but official that a relative unknown named Chris Pine will be playing James T. Kirk in the upcoming reinvention of Star Trek. (That's Pine, and not Pike, BTW.) His resume so far is tiny, and that's fine by me. Unknowns and relative unknowns often work for high porfile roles - Chris Reeve and Daniel Craig come to mind. And he does look close enough to the young Shatner to fit the part.
At this point, the only role not cast is that of Doctor McCoy. Otherwise, it's Zachary Quinto (and also Leonard Nimoy!) as Spock, Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz) as Scotty, and Eric Bana most likely as the villain, with relative unknowns as Uhura, Chekov and Sulu. There's no way to know at this point if the casting is really good, but I was ready to give this film from the second Quinto was hired. And there are some interesting rumors about Nimoy's role in the film that could turn the Trek franchise on its ear while leaving our memories intact.
We have a new Batman and a new James Bond that are working. I see no reason to think we can't get a new Star Trek, too.
