This Week's Comics - Fables

I could say a lot about Fables 61. I don't need to. If you aren't reading this series, in the monthly version or in the trade paperbacks, you should be. And if you are reading, you just read another heartbreaking, humorous, entertaining, unnerving installment and don't need to me to tell you what to think, do you?

Still, ain't this comic good?

Goodbye, Veronica Mars

To no one's surprise, Veronica Mars has been canceled after an acclaimed but low-rated three-year run. There is a tiny chance that something involving Rob Thomas and Kristen Bell is still brewing - that Veronica Mars, FBI idea? - but it's not on the fall schedule, and the show we all knew and liked is over next week.

This doesn't break me up. While the cast and characters were never less than engaging, the stories could be very hit and miss, and the constant fear of cancellation seems to have taken its toll on the writers' creativity. I will miss having a detective series on American broadcast TV, and will miss Veronica and Logan and Keith and the rest, but three years is a good run for such a quirky show. With any luck, Kristen Bell will go onto bigger things, and Rob Thomas will find that one idea with legs.

A Tale of Two Season Finales

On the one hand, Smallville. An hour of my life waste for a few decent moments and one cool fanboy thing, and nothing else. And that is it for me, no matter if they bring back the Justice League.

OTOH, Supernatural. That was great! If the show had been canceled, it would have been a great ending. Thankfully, it wasn't canceled, and it's instead a fine, heartwrenching, strangely uplifting season finale. Wow.
