TV Thoughts - Heroes and VMars
Heroes - I've upgraded this show from Meh to Hmmm. It's still not a great show by any means. Wooden acting (especially from the pretty but clueless Ali Larter), improbable coincidences, an air of pretentiousness in many of the characters and in the awful narration that starts every episode, and a sense that no one who writes the show has ever been to New York or studied an election all hurt this series so far.
But a funny thing happened about halfway through chapter 4: the script got a lot better. For the first time, people started talking like people. Then they started interacting better, too. Mohinder and Peter's conversation on the subway was great. Nathan and Niki's chat in the hotel, while not prefect, way better than anything we've seen with either character. Throw in the cliffhangers with Claire and Peter, and the continuing strength of the Claire and Hiro storylines, and I find myself actually intrigued.
Maybe this will keep getting better? I hope so.
Veronica Mars - Better than last week, but there is still something missing from the stories. The Hearst College Rapist atory arc has been unengaging. The portrayal of college life is cliched. I cannot for a second imagine that Keith would hire Weevil. And the resolution of Veronica vs. the Dean was too close to the sort of thing she did in high school. That said, the main mystery once again defied some of our expectations, and once again told Veronica that her preconceived notions about something - last week sororities and this week football jocks - were wrong. And it's good to have Weevil back.
